About...
The Church of St Gregory the Illuminator is located on the left bank of the River Akhourian, which today forms the Turkish-Armenian border but was once at the heart of historic Armenia. It is dedicated to the evangeliser of Armenia in the 3rd-4th centuries.
Founded at the end of the 10th century and then remodelled in the 13th century, this beautiful church has survived the centuries without too much damage, despite lack of maintenance and earthquakes. However, major restoration and consolidation work is required to ensure its long-term preservation.
Since the Soviet era, this frontier church is located in a military zone, which makes it difficult to visit (prior authorisation is required) but has protected it from vandalism.
Architecturally, this domed church is rectangular in plan, with shallow arms that do not go forward. The south, north and east facades are adorned with large, typically Armenian dihedral niches.
